Terms of Use

Last reviewed on April 24, 2026

These terms govern access to and use of grobid.org (the "site") and the browser-based extraction tool it provides (the "tool"). By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

What the site provides

The site provides a static web application that, when loaded in a modern browser, lets the visitor open a PDF file from their own device and extract structured information from it locally. The site also publishes guides and reference material about PDF metadata, citation formats, and related topics.

Eligibility

You may use the site if you are old enough to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction and your use is not prohibited by applicable law. If you are using the site on behalf of an organisation, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organisation to these terms.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

Your content

The site does not receive uploads. PDFs you select stay on your device. You retain all rights in any file you process and in any output the tool generates from it. You are responsible for making sure that your use of the tool is consistent with the licence terms of the documents you load into it.

Intellectual property

The original text, layout, and code of grobid.org are the property of the site's operator and are protected by copyright and other intellectual-property laws. The site uses the open-source libraries PDF.js (Apache 2.0), pdf-lib (MIT), and docx (MIT), each under its respective licence. The "GROBID" name is associated with an unrelated open-source project; this site is not affiliated with that project, and references to it on this site are descriptive, not commercial.

You may quote and link to pages on this site for non-commercial reference purposes with appropriate attribution. Bulk copying of guides for republication is not permitted without prior permission.

Third-party services

The site loads third-party libraries from a public CDN (jsDelivr) and may display advertising provided by Google AdSense. These third parties operate under their own terms and privacy policies. The site is not responsible for their practices, but it does select them with reasonable care.

Disclaimer of warranties

The site and tool are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. PDF metadata extraction is a heuristic process; the tool will sometimes mis-identify a title, miss a citation, or extract noisy data, especially from scanned or unconventionally formatted PDFs. The tool is offered as an aid, not as a source of authoritative bibliographic records.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the site's operator and contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenues, data, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of the site or tool. The total aggregate liability for direct damages, where liability cannot be excluded, will not exceed an amount equal to the fees you paid to use the site — which, since the site is free, is zero.

Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the site's operator from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your misuse of the site, your breach of these terms, or your violation of any law or third-party right in connection with your use of the site.

Termination

The site may be modified, suspended, or discontinued at any time and without notice. Access for a particular visitor may be blocked if their use materially harms the site or its users. Sections of these terms that by their nature should survive termination (intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnity, governing law) will continue to apply.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [Jurisdiction], without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The courts located in [Jurisdiction] will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of or relating to these terms or the site, except where applicable consumer-protection law gives you the right to sue in your local courts.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated from time to time. The "Last reviewed" date at the top reflects the most recent change. Continued use of the site after a change becomes effective is taken as acceptance of the updated terms. If a change is material, it will be highlighted clearly on the homepage for a reasonable period.
